Bob's Weekend Synopsis - Bob's Weekend's story centres around Bob, a mancunian night-shift security guard. One Friday night he goes to work and is promptly fired by his unstable boss. Returning home early and catches his wife with her lover. With seemingly nothing to live for he heads to Blackpool with the intention of committing suicide by jumping off the end of the pier. But he wants to do it properly, and searches out some items to mark the occasion. When Bob makes it to the end of the pier he is discovered by a young Psychology student, Angela, who gives him the benefit of a different outlook on his life, but will he change his mind?

Review of Bob's Weekend - Bob's Weekend is reminiscent of another film that Bruce Jones starred in - that being Ken Loach's "Raining Stones". Bruce Jones's character there was also a man at the very point of desperation and hopelessness, and Jones's performance here is very much in line with that. The similarities end there, as this story is much more of a journey. It takes us on a, sometimes surreal trip around Blackpool, but much more than that the journey of how Bob has ended up where he is, exploring the difference between how he sees himself and his life and how others see it. Bruce Jones takes the lead very well and is ably supported by Brian Glover, Ricky Tomlinson, and superb in her first feature, Charlotte Jones. For a little film there is a lot to appreciate here.
The reasons I recommend Bob's Weekend are: 1. A very interesting and engaging exploration of despair. 2. Bruce Jones is excellent, as is Ricky Tomlinson, Brian Glover and Charlotte Jones.
