Brighton Rock Synopsis - Brighton Rock is set in the seaside town of Brighton, (a resort that Londoners come to at the weekend to let their hair down). The story centres around Pinkie Brown, a young and violent would-be gangster, who runs a gang who are operating amongst other scams, a protection racket at the local Horse racing stadium. When a rival gang start to encroach on the races Pinkie orders the murder of one of his rivals - Fred. Care is taken to make it look like suicide and the police seem to believe it to be suicide. But there is a problem - Ida, who was with Fred just before he died. Ida cant believe it was suicide and tries to find out what has happened. With the net closing in Pinkie needs to keep a false alibi sweet (a naive waitress Rose) by marrying her. But with Ida sniffing around, rival gangs looking to take over whilst Pinkie is trying to keep a low profile, this makes his own gang start to doubt whether he can still run the firm, and the pressure starts to mount on Pinkie - what can he do to get control back?

Review of Brighton Rock - (AKA Young Scarface in the USA). A superb and brutal adaptation of Graham Greene's classic novel by the now legendary Boulting brothers. Brighton Rock is probably the daddy of all British gangster movies, and you can certainly see parallels in aspects of much later films such as Clockwork Orange, Get Carter etc. What is particularly impressive in the film is the menace that Richard Attenborough instills into his portrayal of Pinkie, ditto that William Hartnell's similarly vicious portrayal of his sidekick Dallow. This is rightly considered a classic of British Cinema and thankfully is now again readily available on DVD.
The reasons I recommend this film are: 1. A superb story faithfully lifted from Graham Greene's classic novel. 2. Terrifically accomplished performances by Attenborough and Hartnell as the violent mobsters.
