A Cock and Bull Story Synopsis - A Cock and Bull Story centres on two actors Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, who are the two main actors in a film that is currently shooting. The film they are working on is an adaptation of the classic novel Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne - which is a book previously thought to be "unfilmable" due to its constant interruption and digression of a story that never gets told. Coogan is the star of the film, and Brydon is the co-star and as filming continues Coogan's self doubt creeps in and to counter this he starts to assert his authority over the easy going and comfortable Brydon. The story is intercut to the actual film scenes where we see Coogan as Tristram Shandy and Brydon as Toby Shandy. The story is then cut back to behind the scenes of the filming where Coogan is trying to assert his view on how the film should proceed with the director and writers. With his wife and newly born child joining him, a member of the production team wants to have an affair with him, and all the time he see's a relaxed Brydon being the centre of attention with his humorous easy going manner. |
| Review of A Cock and Bull Story - Given the fact that A Cock and Bull Story is cut between actual scenes of a film, and a behind the scenes story of the actors appearing in the film, it works amazingly well. This is no small part due to the performances of Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon who have a huge amount of comedic chemistry flowing between them, and also their performances are such that you are convinced, beyond any doubt, that both Coogan and Brydon are playing "themselves". The other important thing to say is that this film is actually very funny throughout. Special mention needs to go the both the writer (Frank Cottrell Boyce) and the Director (Michael Winterbottom - one of our finest directors) for knitting together such an excellent story and then getting it to work so beautifully. |
| The reasons I recommend A Cock and Bull Story are: 1. Fantastic performances by Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon 2. A truly very funny film within its layers. |
