Jubilee Synopsis - During her reign Queen Elizabeth I asks her court magician to show her how much she has influenced the future. To achieve this he summons up the angel Ariel, and together they are transported to from the 16th Century to an England of the future. The 20th century landscape is now a bleak wasteland where society is crumbling. The streets are run by teenage girl punks and by the police who serve the new empire run by media giants. Elizabeth's manifestation is Bod, who runs a disparate and desperate gang who stop at nothing to escape the boredom.

Review of Jubilee - Released at the height of punk Jubilee captures better than most the spirit of punk, albeit the high brow aesthetics associated with it rather than the low brow media take on the Punk movement. The style and ideas put forward in Jarman's film certainly singled him out as a very innovative and unique talent, indeed the film is only let down by the small budget and some of the acting which is just the wrong side of amateur. But for those downsides this is both an entertaining and interesting different film that stretches beyond being a purely punk curio.
The reasons I recommend Jubilee are: 1. Terrifically innovative and different film - as you expect from the amazing Derek Jarman. 2. Superb snapshot of counter culture at the height of the punk movement.
