Letter To Brezhnev Synopsis - Letter To Brezhnev is set in Liverpool and centres around Elaine. Elaine is disenchanted with her life and surroundings. One night Elaine and her friend Theresa go out in town for a evening out. There they meet two Russian sailors, who are ashore to spend a night away from their ship docked in Liverpool. Elaine and Peter immediately hit it off and fall in love with each other, but Peter's ship leaves the next morning and Peter leaves with it. As time passes it becomes clear that Elaine is deeply in love with Peter and can't put him out of her mind. So she writes a letter to Russian president Leonid Brezhnev, begging him to relax his regime so that she can be reunited with Peter. |
| Review of Letter To Brezhnev - Given the fall of communism the story a little dated, but underneath that this still does work as a contemporary love story that uniquely does not have the pretence of tying everything up in ribbon bows, and its overriding style is one of stark realism. There is of course a fair amount of gritty humour that adds yet another layer to this superb film. This is yet another Film 4 film that is lost in the mists of time, just like the writer Frank Clarke's next movie "The Fruit Machine" which was also an excellent film. |
| The reasons I recommend Letter To Brezhnev are: 1. An excellent cast perfectly attuned with the mood of the film. 2. A superb script with especially good dialogue. |
