The Mother Synopsis - The Mother centres around the character of May, a grandmother living in the North of England. May and her husband visit their adult children in London and during their visit her husband dies. With the world seemingly going by without her, and her children's lives running around at such a pace, she looks to get her own life back. Whilst staying at her sons house she gets to talking to Darren - a young man who is renovating her sons house. Flattered by the attention and attracted by Darren's youthful care free attitude they commence on a passionate affair. But is Darren what he seems and can she keep the affair secret from her children?

Review of The Mother - The Mother is a superb and delightfully underplayed story of a neglected women who feels as if life has forgotten her, especially since her role as mother and wife seemed to have disappeared, and who looks to start living life again. This is beautifully explored by Hanif Kureishi's magnificently thoughtful script, and expertly brought to the screen by Roger Michell (whose next film was the superb "Enduring Love"). The film has a great cast (including future James Bond - Daniel Craig), but special mention has to be given to Anne Reid who gives a truly superb performance in her portrayal of the title character.
The reasons I recommend The Mother are: 1. Fantastic performance by Anne Reid in the title role. 2. Stunning script by Hanif Kureishi.
