Don't Look NowYear: 1973 Director: Nicolas Roeg
The story centres around John Baxter (Donald Sutherland) and his wife Laura (Julie Christie) who, following the death of their daughter in a drowning accident, relocate to Venice. Trying to recover from their feelings of grief and guilt they attempt to make a fresh start, but out of the blue a blind woman, claiming she is psychic, tells Laura that her dead daughter is now "happy". Laura tells John about it but he is cannot believe this could be possible. Soon John begins to catch fleeting glimpses of his daughter, dressed in a red rain coat, in the streets of Venice, and slowly begins to consider whether his dead daughter is trying to contact them. With the atmosphere heightened by a series of murders that are taking place in Venice, John is pushed on to search for his daughter through the streets and to try and finally catch up with her. Don't Look Now is a particularly disturbing film. The Director's (Nicolas Roeg) intelligent adaptation of the Daphne Du Maurier novel makes for uncomfortably edgy viewing, and regardless of how many times you view the film, the spiky psychological terror is never diminished. The film is visually stunning (Nicolas Roeg's forte) and makes the most of the stunning scenery around the labyrinthine back streets of Venice. The cast is faultless with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie giving perhaps their finest performances of their long careers. 1973 was golden year for scary movies it seems also released was The Exorcist and The Wicker Man (which was the supporting feature to Don't Look Now). Don't Look Now is one to avoid if you favour horror of the gory variety, but for sheer psychological terror this film is the top of the tree. Don't Look Now is featured in our Interactive Haunted House of Horror guide to horror films and scary movies.
