Shaun of the DeadYear: 2004 Director: Edgar Wright
The story of Shaun Of The Dead (just likely every Zombie movie) is hugely straightforward - so here goes. Shaun (Simon Pegg - Spaced, Hot Fuzz ) a late twenties something Londoner is caught in a dead end job, he lives in a flat with his lazy childhood friend Ed (Nick Frost) and due to the comfortable rut he has placed himself within, his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) has dumped him. Things certainly don't look great for Shaun, but they get a whole lot worse when the dead start re-animating and come to life to roam the streets and pray on the living. So when the streets get over run with Zombies, Shaun must lead his small band of friends to safety of the place he know best - the pub. Ok I know what you are going to say - "Shaun Of The Dead is not that Scary" - I agree its not that scary, but its a superb film, very funny and is suitably close to the "proper" Zombie movies that it spoofs. Anyway I think this is probably the best Zombie film there has been. The Zombie genre is obviously ripe for spoofing, and lets be honest, most of the best Zombie movies have managed to send themselves up quite successfully. Whilst Shaun Of The Dead succeeds as an out and out spoof of the genre, it also works beautifully as a Zombie movie in its own right with enough subtlety and invention to rise to the top of the pile. Obviously its humour is where it trumps its rivals, not only in terms of horror spoofs, but it is probably the funniest and finest comedy film made in the last few years. This helped the film gain appreciation of a wide audience, both mainstream and also die hard Zombie fans who very much appreciated the subtle references to classic Zombie flicks. After the success of Shaun of The Dead the same team went on to reinvent the cop buddy movie with their superb spoof Hot Fuzz. Shaun of the Dead features our Interactive Haunted House of Horror guide to horror films and scary movies.
