May 2013 - With the (Sky)fallout from the Academy Awards still fresh in our minds, we'd like to tell you what we liked about the ceremony. Ted and Mark Wahlberg presenting an award, and Seth McFarlane's show tune number. Little else in the show's carefully choreographed procession of hacks and has-beens that is the Hollywood system, seemed to any relevance whatsoever to a celebration of the art of the cinema.

Michael Haneke triumphed with Amour being nominated for 5 Academy awards (Best Picture, Actress, Director, Screenplay and Foreign Film), and whilst only collecting the prize for Foreign Film, it seems pretty clear that had it not been for the fact this is a non-US film it would have scooped at least two more of the top prizes (much as we like Argo and Life of Pi they were not worthy Oscar winners). We were disappointed also that the wonderful Moonrise Kingdom was practically ignored with but a single nomination.

On our list of films to see films over the next few weeks are: Shane Meadows' docco of The Stone Roses - Made Of Stone; Michael Winterbottom's The Look Of Love, reuniting the director with Steve Coogan for the Paul Raymonde bio-pic; Keith Allen and Phil Daniels appearing in Vinyl (the film that is) and Acoustic Routes the documentary on Bert Jansch.

After watching a good poker movie UK poker players can now watch Sky Poker online tournaments live on Sky Channel 846.They can still play and watch more traditional online at pokersites.com, but it is great to have the option to watch others playing online tournaments live on tv now.
