The Sound of Music
The
Hills are alive - with the sound of royalties for
the annual Christmas TV repeat fees.
In
1930's Austria, a novice nun named Maria is failing
her attempt to become a nun. When a letter is sent
to the convent by a widower, Captain Von Trapp,
asking for a for a
governess for his seven boisterous
children, the mother superior decides that Maria
should take up the challenge. With the regimented
way that the Captain keeps order with the children
Maria realises that the childrens behaviour behaviour
is a result of their regimented and unhappy. Maria
manages to win the children round and the whole
household is happy for the first time in along
time. Maria and the Captain find themselves falling
in love, and despite the problems that will cause
(with Maria's religious vows and Captain Von Trapp's
existing engagement that needs to be called off)
they decide to pursue their feelings and get married.
Although their little world is happy, there are
storm clouds gathering all over Europe spelling
uncertainty and danger for the Captain and his
family.
I'll
be honest this is not one of my favourite films,
but i know it is everyone elses and that it is
a quintessential Christmas movie. It is certainly
a film that makes me feel Christmassy - its just
I don't actually want to watch it. Although I have
never consciously sat down to watch the film it
has been on TV so many times at Christmas I probably
know most of the film word for word - certainly
scene by scene anyway. I have got nothing against
the film, its a very pleasant film, well made,
with some nice songs all allied to a very good
story. For me its enough to know that the film
exists, and that its on at Christmas as is traditional,
and leave me with my memories of being the only
one in the household who didn't want to watch it
(and this was during the time of only three TV
channels and being a one TV household). Bah Humbug
indeed.
