The Santa Clause
Tim
Allen finds himself surrounded by snow (a clear
case of art imitating life).
Scott
Calvin, a divorcee, is trying to rebuild his relationship
with his 6 year old son Charlie. On Christmas Eve
Scott is reading The Night Before Christmas to
Charlie when they hear someone on the roof. When
they go to investigate they spot a trespasser on
the roof, and startled by Scott hollering, the
trespasser falls off the roof to the ground below.
The trespasser is dressed as Santa and soon slips
into unconsciousness and then disappears. On the
roof they find a sleigh with reindeer, a Santa
costume and some instructions for such circumstances.
Scott reluctantly puts on the suit to humour Charlie,
and they are transported around the town delivering
the presents from the sleigh. They are then whisked
off to the North Pole where Scott is advised by
the head elf that having donned the Santa suit
he must now assume the role of Santa, and further,
that he has 11 months to prepare for his role and
to sort out his affairs of his previous life. When
Scott wakes up he assumes that he has must have
been dreaming but when he starts gaining weight
rapidly, starts to grow a bushy white beard that
cant be shaved off and hair his begins to turn
white, he begins to wonder whether he is actually
bedoming Santa Claus.
The
Santa Clause is
definitely one of the better modern day Disney
movies. It has a charming, original and pretty
amusing storyline,
which makes it extremely watchable. Being
Disney there ia an attempt at instilling a few
messages about values into the film (family values
and belief / faith), but its a Christmas film after
all so it doesn't tarnish the flavour of the piece
overly. The Santa Clause
is definitely in the tradition
of the classic Christmas movie (like Miracle
on 34th Street), where its main strengths
are the watchability and the effective maintaining
of the festive atmosphere throughout the movie.
It looks like in time The
Santa Clause will
take its place alongside the classics in the affection
of the viewing public.
