I Am Sam Synopsis - I Am Sam centres around Sam - a young man who has severe learning difficulties and has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old. He has a baby with a homeless woman who abandons them both as soon as the baby is born. He names the baby girl Lucy as he is a big Beatles fan. He raises his daughter on his own and supports them by working at Starbucks. We pick up the story when Lucy reaches age of 7 and is clearly very intelligent for her age and starts to realise that her father cannot be everything thing she wants him to be, and stops showing her academic progress so not to show up her father. After a misunderstanding, the authorities become aware of the situation and decide to take Lucy away and put her with an adoptive family who they believe can better bring up an intelligent young girl. Sam is advised by his support network of friends, who all have learning difficulties, to go to a Lawyer to fight to get Lucy back. Rita Harrison is a hard edged, high flying and very busy lawyer who Sam wants to take the case, but he cant afford her services and he is shown summarily to do the door. But in an effort to deflect personal criticism of her from her colleagues, Rita agrees to take on Sam's case for free. Can Sam persuade Rita that he is a suitable person to bring up his daughter, and if so will Rita be able to persuade the family courts of his suitability?

Review of I Am Sam - Bearing in mind the subject matter this film could have easily been made very sweetly and schmaltzy. It is in fact a very honest and genuine attempt to address some difficult questions. The three main actors are all fantastic. The actors playing Sam's friends do in real life have learning difficulties, and their inclusion in this film is a real delight. I Am Sam is both heart warming and full of integrity.
The reasons I recommend I Am Sam are: 1. A superb story tackling some difficult issues with immense integrity. 2. The performances of Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer and Dakota Fanning are absolutely excellent. 3. The soundtrack is worth getting on its own - it is a superb collection of contemporary cover versions of Beatle songs.
