Life Is Beautiful Synopsis - Life Is Beautiful is set in Italy during the period of the 1930s through World War 2. The story centres around Guid, o a Jewish book keeper, who is both charismatic and funny. Guido falls in love with Dora, a beautiful school teacher, whom he manages to win over despite the fact she is already engaged to be married. Guido and Dora live very happily together and they have a son, Giosue. But with the on going war, Guido and his son are identified as being of Jewish extraction and are rounded up by the German forces to be taken to a concentration camp. Dora not wishing to leave her family manages to get on the train bound for the same concentration camp. From the start Guido manages to convince his son that the whole situation is an elaborate game that everybody is playing and the winner will get the first prize of a new tank. As the situation grows even grimmer and can Guido keep the reality from his son, and more importantly can they hold on. |
| Review of Life Is Beautiful - Life Is Beautiful is an absolute masterpiece of a story. A tremendous skillfully constructed tale of the triumph of the human spirit over the extreme hardships of an evil regime. Although the reality of the situation is unremittingly bleak, the stories that Guido constructs to cover up the situation are both inspired and very funny. Benigni's performance is nothing short of amazing. This is a true classic of modern cinema, and even through the heartbreak of the story, it is a hugely enjoyable but also very thought provoking film. |
| The reasons I recommend Life Is Beautiful are: 1. A superb and heartbreaking story told with dignity, humour and sincerity. 2. The performance of Benigni is absolutely colossal. |
