The Magdalene Sisters Synopsis - The Magdalene Sisters is set in Ireland and centres around three young women forced into the custody of the Magdalene sisterhood institution. The nuns who run the institution make no bones about how the regime will work them past all beyond human endurance in order to redeem themselves from previous "sins" they have committed, "sin's" that range from giving birth to a child as a result of a sexual assault to talking to boys. But past the inhumanly hard work that they are forced to do in the laundry, the regime is even more cruel and sadistic. Whilst some of the other inmates still have faith that the nuns are carrying out gods will and they themselves deserve the punishment, the rest of new girls see that they have done nothing wrong to be holed up in this institution and start to hatch plans to avoid being consigned there for life. |
| Review of The Magdalene Sisters - The Magdalene Sisters is a very powerful and brutal story, all the more powerful for the fact that its is closely based on the experiences of such girls in this institution. Peter Mullan pulls no punches whatsoever and the story is absolute indictment of the brutality and corruption occurring inside these institutions until relatively recently. The main characters are portrayed superbly by these young actresses. Special mention should also go to Geraldine McEwan who is truly fantastic in this film. |
| The reasons I recommend The Magdalene Sisters are: 1. A brutal and powerful story based on true life experiences. 2. A terrific cast. |
