Muriel's Wedding Synopsis - Muriel's Wedding is set in Australia in the charmingly named city of Porpoise Spit. The film centres around Muriel, a plain and overweight young lady desperately trying to fit in with her "beautiful" friends. During the day Muriel suits around her home playing Abba tapes and dreaming that one day she will get married. Her family is somewhat dysfunctional, her father is a local councilor, who takes bribes and freebies in return for favours he can grant within the council, he is also having an affair with a younger woman. Her mother is seemingly bewildered by Muriel and her brothers and sisters - and the housework. Frustrated by Muriel's lack of ability in gaining a job, her father gets his mistress to give her a job selling kits, but in her desperation to go on a holiday with her "friends" (who don't want her to go as she is not on their level) she steals money from the business and fly's away. Her "friends" are less than happy to see her and tell her to go away. By chance Rhonda, a girl who used to go their school is at the same holiday destination and bumps into Muriel, and they strike up an instant friendship. When Muriel returns home from her holiday her deception is discovered. She decides to leave for the big city and for a better life but still dreaming of her wedding. Muriel and Rhonda share a flat and life seems good, but bad news is just around the corner as Rhonda has a health scare, her father leaves the marital home, and her mother starts into a steep decline. In amongst this strife a South African swimmer wants to marry her in a marriage of convenience so that he can stay in the country. Will she agree to marry him just so she can have a wedding day that she has always dreamed of? |
| Review of Muriel's Wedding - Muriel's Wedding is a superb and original comedy. The film is not only fantastically funny in places, but there are also some really well honed tender and genuinely sad moments here to underscore the "life happens" aspect. Toni Collete is superb in this and it is obvious form this film she was going to be a real star. The rest of the cast are brilliant, especially her "useless" family and her bitchy "friends". This is also one of the most easy to watch films you will ever see. |
| The reasons I recommend Muriel's Wedding are: 1. A very funny film with a storyline that also touches the opposite emotions very skillfully. 2. Superb performance by Toni Collette. |
